Special Needs Community

Jean Vanier is known as a social visionary with a keen sense of what makes for a compassionate society. He has received numerous humanitarian honours including the Companion of the Order of Canada. He had a naval career, earned a doctorate in philosophy (Institut Catholique, Paris) and taught at St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto, before founding L’Arche,  Jean Vanier also founded an international network of support groups for families of people with developmental disabilities.He is a son of Canadian Governor-General Georges Vanier and Pauline Vanier.

“L’Arche Avalon is a local group affiliated with L’Arche Canada and L’Arche International.”L’Arche” means “the Ark” as in Noah’s Ark – a place of safety and shelter. This organization started in France over 50 years ago, by Canadian Jean Vanier does two things really well: first it establishes homes, programs and workshops for adults with intellectual disabilities and secondly it exists to celebrate the lives and gifts of these people.
There are L’Arche communities all around the world and in every province of Canada except NL and PEI. The local group, L’Arche Avalon, intends to establish and sustain a L’ Arche home and day care
